January 10, 2024: In a move that will boost digital ticketing and payments, the Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has introduced a WhatsApp ticketing facility in metro trains, according to media reports. The facility was inaugurated on January 9, 2024, by actress Miya George in the presence of KMRL MD Loknath Behera at a function held in the KMRL headquarters.
How to buy a ticket through the KMRL WhatsApp ticketing facility?
With the new ticketing facility, commuters can purchase WhatsApp QR tickets through the KMRL WhatsApp number 9188957488.
- To buy a ticket, send ‘Hi’ to the number on WhatsApp and follow the instructions.
- Click on ‘QR ticket’.
- Click on ‘Book ticket’.
- In the next step, select entry and exit stations from the list.
- Select the number of passengers.
- Finally, make the payment online by preferred mode.
- In case of cancellation, type and send ‘Hi’.
Commuters will get a 10% discount on tickets purchased through WhatsApp during normal hours, while they can get a 50% discount during non-peak hours (5:45 AM to 7 AM and 10 PM to 11 PM).
As cited in an Onmanorama report, Loknath Behera said the KMRL and its ticketing partner Axis Bank are experimenting with using Kochi-1 card for commuters in buses, feeder buses and feeder auto rickshaws in addition to Kochi Metro and Water Metro. In 2024, all efforts are being made to reach an average ridership of one lakh per day on Kochi Metro.
