The Kolkata Metro Network is witnessing rapid expansion, connecting different parts of the city in the eastern and western regions. The Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRCL) is the government agency that is implementing the Kolkata Metro Line 2 project, also known as the East-West Metro Corridor. This corridor includes an underwater tunnel that will pass beneath River Hooghly. Currently, it includes an operational section between Salt Lake and Sealdah. According to media reports, India’s first underwater metro in Kolkata is expected to be operational by December 2023.

Kolkata Metro Green Line: Construction details

Construction work on the Kolkata Metro Green Line is underway. Under Phase 1, the elevated corridor is fully operational. In October 2020, the East-West Metro Corridor was extended from Salt Lake Stadium to Phoolbagan.

Under Phase 2 of the Kolkata Metro project, a 5,490-metre tunnel has been completed. The underground stations at Phoolbagan and Sealdah were opened under Phases 2 and 3, respectively. The tunnelling work under Phase 3 has been completed.

 

Kolkata Metro Green Line: Route

The Kolkata Metro Green Line covers 22 kilometres and comprises 17 stations (11 elevated stations and 6 underground stations). Interchange points are at Teghoria, Salt Lake Sector-V and Esplanade, which connect with the Orange Line, Blue Line and Purple Line, respectively.

Once completed, the Green Line will connect Howrah with Teghoria. The twin cities of Kolkata and Howrah will be linked by an underwater tunnel below River Hooghly. The underwater section will connect Howrah Maidan and Esplanade and is expected to be operational soon.
