Sept 2, 2024: In a bid to ease property registration in Mumbai, the Maharashtra government has simplified the process. Under the new process, according to a notification issued by the Maharashtra government on August 28, 2024, all properties following under the BMC jurisdiction can be registered in any sub-registrar office in the city.
Additionally, to further simply identification of the SRO, the Maharashtra government has clubbed the 32 SROs in the city under two divisions- Mumbai Suburban where 26 SROs are present and Mumbai City where six SROs are present.
Harsh Parikh, partner, Khaitan & Co, said, “The Government of Maharashtra issued a notification on August 28, 2024 permitting parties to admit execution and register their documents at any office of the sub-registrar, regardless of where the property is situated. The Government has now consolidated all registration offices into two: one for ‘Mumbai City’ and the other for ‘Mumbai Suburban.’ Previously, there were 32 joint sub-registrars situated in Fort, Worli, Andheri, Kurla, and Borivali. This is an extremely progressive step by the Government to ease the process of registration.”
