The Maharashtra Real Estate Regulatory Authority (MahaRera) has issued show-cause notices and slapped a penalty of Rs 33 lakh on 370 real estate projects in the state for publishing advertisements without the RERA registration number or QR codes. This includes ads from the website, newspapers and social media sites like Facebook, Instagram and Youtube. Of the imposed fine, Rs 22.20 lakh has already been recovered by the authority. Among the 370 penalised projects, 173 are located in Mumbai, 162 in Pune and 35 in Nagpur.

Starting August 1, 2023, the MahaRera has made it compulsory for real estate developers to display the Rera registration number and QR code of their projects in all advertisements and promotion activities to avoid a penalty of as much as Rs 50,000. Even real estate agents were directed to display these details in all advertisements. All the new projects in Maharashtra have been given a distinct QR code to provide homebuyers with the necessary information.
