January 31, 2024: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has extended the deadline for geotagging of commercial and residential properties in the city by their owners to February 29, 2024, as per media reports. Earlier, the deadline to geotag properties was January 31, 2024. This will enable property owners in Delhi to geotag their properties and avail of a 10% rebate on lumpsum advance tax payments in the next financial year (2024-2025).
The civic body said several owners are facing technical difficulties in geotagging their property with the MCD’s portal. It has come to the notice of the Department that a large number of taxpayers using iPhone (iOS version) due to some technical glitches or due to some other reasons have not been able to geotag their properties by the due date. This issue is being handled on priority and will soon be resolved, an MCD order said as cited in media reports.
Geotagging properties involves digitally mapping a property with the geographic information system (GIS). This helps identify a property on a map with its unique and permanent latitude and longitude coordinates. To geotag a property, property owners must download MCD’s mobile app and, while present at their property, choose the current location and link it with any unique property identification code (UPIC).
On December 7, 2024, Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi said that the MCD is working towards creating a proper database of property tax records using cutting-edge technology. This aims to get 15 lakh properties geotagged in two months and those who geotag would be eligible for a rebate.
