The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (Mhada) has identified 15 dilapidated residential buildings in South Mumbai that are unfit for staying. These buildings are located in in the areas including Girgaum, Kalbadevi, Khetwadi and Kamathipura. The buildings are more than 80 years old.
Residents of these buildings who are around 545, have been asked to vacate immediately as these building fall under the extremely dangerous category. Following the notice, 155 residents have made alternate residential arrangements. 21 residents have been moved to transit camps.
Mhada’s Mumbai Building Repair and Reconstruction Board (MBRRB) carries out survey of old and dilapidated cessed buildings in Mumbai every year before the monsoons. Of these 15 buildings, seven buildings featured in the MBRRB list of 2022.
Independently, the BMC has also released a list of 226 dilapidated buildings under the C-1 category (very dangerous) in Mumbai, residents of which have been sent notices to vacate. Citizens can view the list on www.mcgm.gov.in .
