MMRDA granted permission to cut 122 trees for Twin Tube Tunnel Project

It will connect Thane and Borivali with Twin Tube Tunnel passing under the Sanjay Gandhi National Park.

October 23, 2023: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has been granted permission by the State Board of Wildlife to cut 122 trees for the construction of the Twin Tube Tunnel road between Thane and Borivali.  The clearance was granted at the State board of Wildlife’s 22nd meeting.

The Twin Tube Tunnel will pass under the Sanjay Gandhi National Park.  It will start from Tikuji-Ni-Wadi from Thane and go till the Western Express Highway in Borivali. This project will reduce the travel time between Thane and Borivali from one hour to around 20 minutes.

The 10.25 km project will have two tunnel roads. Each will have two separate lanes and an emergency lane. The approach road to this project will be around one and a half km.

To be completed in five years, the MMRDA is expected to take measures that will safeguard the Sanjay Gandhi National Park’s biodiversity.
