MMRDA proposes to develop 350-sqkm new town across Mumbai harbour

The proposed new town will be developed where the MTHL ends.

September 27,2023: The Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) has proposed the development of a new town spread across 350 sqkm across the Mumbai harbour. On the back of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) and the Mumbai Transharbour Link (MTHL), the authority aims to make this the fastest-growing centre in India in the next 10 years.

“From MMRDA, we have proposed a new town where the MTHL lands. MTHL is supposed to be a game changer,” said, Sanjay Mukherjee, MMRDA commissioner to the media. According to him, MTHL and NMIA will each boost the national GDP by 1 % point, thus turning the Navi Mumbai region into a hotspot for economic activity. The Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) business district spread across 160 hectare, also developed by the MMRDA a few decades ago, contributes 2.8 % of the national GDP, he added.

City name City size
Mumbai 600 sqkm
Navi Mumbai 344 sqkm
Naina 370 sqkm

He added that the development of this town will be different from Naina. MMRDA is planning it in such a way that the town’s infrastructure such as connectivity is developed before the development of buildings here.
