The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) issued a notification on April 10, 2023, stating that the name changes for three metro stations on lines 2A and 7 have been approved. The proposal for renaming the stations was under consideration and the competent authority has now granted approval.
Pahad Eksar Metro station, located on metro line 2A, has been renamed as Shimpoli. Valnai metro station, also on metro line 2A, has been renamed as Valnai-Meeth Chowky. Pahadi Goregaon metro station, located on metro line 7, has been renamed as Bangur Nagar.
These changes are a result of repeated demands from commuters to change the names of certain metro stations to more popular identities. Commuters had previously expressed dissatisfaction with the original names of these stations, stating that they were unfamiliar and not well-known among locals. Valnai station, in particular, was commonly referred to as Meeth Chowky by the public. By incorporating the popular local name in the revised station name, the authority aims to make it easier for commuters to identify and locate the station.
MMRDA has assured that the changes will be implemented at the earliest and updated on all relevant signage and communication channels to minimize any inconvenience to the commuters.
