Work on the Mumbai Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor has achieved 25% completion as of January 2023 end, which is slightly behind the 30% target. This is India’s first bullet train project, which is under-construction and the overall cost incurred for the project so far is Rs 36,722.60 crore. The government has planned to commence trial runs on the Surat – Billimora section in Gujarat by August 2026, to make the entire stretch between Ahmedabad and Mumbai fully operational by 2027.
The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) is working to shorten the project timeline. As per the officials, railway minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, is monitoring the progress of the project closely. The Japanese side is regularly monitoring the project’s development. Recently, a high-level delegation led by the special advisor to the Japanese Prime Minister visited the sites to assess the project’s progress.
The bullet train project will be developed using Japan’s E5 Shinkansen technology. It will cover over 508 km through Maharashtra, Gujarat, Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
