Mumbai’s first metro line is the 11.4 km Mumbai Metro One that operates between Versova and Ghatkopar. Also known as the Mumbai Metro Blue Line, it connects the eastern and western suburbs of Mumbai. This metro has the eighth highest passenger density in the world. The Mumbai Metro Blue Line has significantly helped in decongesting traffic on road by reducing travel time from Versova to Ghatkopar from 90–120 minutes to 21 minutes. This metro route bypasses over 45 traffic signals.
The Mumbai Metro One was developed under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) policy and is operated by a special purpose vehicle (SPV) – Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL).
According to media reports in December 2024, the National Asset Reconstruction Company Ltd (NARCL) acquired the debt of Rs 2,658 crore of the MMOPL. NARCL took over the debt from five domestic banks including the State Bank of India, IDBI Bank, Canara Bank, Indian Bank and Bank of Maharashtra.

The Mumbai Metro Line 1 is planning to start shuttle services to accommodate the commuters especially during peak hours, mention a ToI report.
