In 1983, Namdapha Tiger Reserve was established as the 15th Tiger Project in India. It encompasses a core area of 1985.245 sqkm and a buffer area of 245 sqkm, making the total reserve area 1985 sqkm. The reserve gets its name from the Namdapha River, which flows from Daphabum (Dapha, a hill, and Bum, meaning peak of hill) and joins the Noa-Dehing river. The Namdapha River runs across the National Park in a North-South direction, giving the park its distinctive name.
