July 27, 2023: In the financial year 2022-23 (FY23), states in India removed names of over 5.18 crore registered workers from the National Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGA). The number of deletions during the last fiscal was 247% higher than the deletions in FY22, rural development minister Giriraj Singh told the Lok Sabha in a written reply on July 25.
In FY22, the NREGA job cards of 14,951,247 workers were deleted while the exact number was 51,891,168 in 2022-23. West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana saw the highest number of NREGA card deletions during FY23.
As against 157,309 job cards in FY22, 8,336,115 job cards were deleted in West Bengal in FY23.
As against 625,514 job cards in FY22, 7,805,569 job cards were deleted in Andhra Pradesh in FY23.
As against 61,278 job cards in FY22, 1,732,936 job cards were deleted in Telangana in FY23.
As against 143,202 job cards in FY22, 430,404 job cards were deleted in Gujarat in FY23.
In his reply, the minister citied incorrect job card, duplicate job card, unwillingness to work, migration and death of the beneficiary as the key reasons for removal of the workers’ name from the NREGA list.
Officially known as the Mahatma Gandhi NREGA, the scheme is a demand driven programme under which registered households may apply for unskilled work for up to 100 days in a year. A total of 2.95 crore people were registered up to financial year 2020-21 in the age group of 18-30 years under the scheme. This number increased to 3.06 crore in the financial year 2022-23. In FY23, 57.43% of NREGA workers were women.
