Nanpu Bridge: When was it constructed?

The Nanpu Bridge provides connectivity to villages that were previously separated by water. Prior to the bridge’s construction in 1991, the only means to navigate between the cities of Puxi and Pudong was via ferry or boat. After the bridge was opened to the public, between 14,000 and 17,000 automobiles began crossing it every day.

The bridge spans 846 metre. The main span of the bridge that crosses the lake is 423 metre long. The major girders are supported by 22 steel cables organised in a fan configuration, which yet another striking feature of the bridge. 

One of the bridge’s greatest draws is its circular form. They designed it in this manner to lower the gradient of the approach to the bridge. The circles also aided in reducing land use, which is obviously a key problem in most major urban areas.

The circular area, together with the span of the bridge, resembles a dragon lying across the river when viewed from above. This dragon’s overall length is 8,346 metre.
