With water woes in many parts of North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) limits, the civic body has decided to strictly implement the provisions pertaining to water harvesting, as per its building bye-laws.
“The water problem is worsening and the water levels are going down. This has necessitated water harvesting. We will strictly follow related rules, for equipping buildings and other plots having area measuring 100 sq metres or more, in corporation areas,” said Rajesh Bhatia, vice-chairman of NDMC’s standing committee.
As per a government of India notification, water harvesting provision is necessary in plots measuring 100 sq metres or more, under the building bye-laws of 1983, he said.

The NDMC has ensured water harvesting at its buildings, including community centres, schools, offices, dispensaries and hospitals among others, and wants the people to follow it, as well, he said.
The zonal building department offices are responsible for ensuring that the water harvesting rule is followed, while issuing occupancy certificates for newly-constructed buildings.
Bhatia had also floated a proposal for providing funds to ward councillors, to take up five water harvesting projects annually.
