The NH2 was earlier known by various other numbers before it was renumbered. It was previously designated as old national highways 37, 61, 39, 150 and 54. In 2010, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) renumbered and reclassified the national highways network. As a result, the NH2 came into existence, connecting the north-eastern states of India.

On the other hand, the Asian Highway-2 runs from Denpasar in Indonesia to Khosravi in Iran, covering a distance of 13,177 km.
