Karnataka citizens must apply for a learner’s licence before applying for a permanent driving licence. The different forms of driving licences issued by the Karnataka government are mentioned below. 

Driving licence for motorcycles without gear

Candidates can apply for this type of licence to drive motorcycles and two-wheelers without gear, such as scooters and mopeds. 

Driving licence for light motor vehicle

One can apply for this licence to drive light motor vehicles, including bikes and cars.

Driving licence for transport vehicles

Citizens in Karnataka looking to drive transport automobiles, including cabs, private service vehicles, lorries, trucks and trailers, must apply for a permanent driving licence for transport vehicles.

 

Parivahan Karnataka: Eligibility to apply for a driving licence

  • One should have a valid learner’s licence, to apply for a driving licence.
  • The application for a permanent driving licence must be submitted 30 days after or within 180 days of obtaining the learner’s licence.
  • The candidate should be aware of traffic laws and regulations.
  • For a driving licence for motorcycles without gear: The eligibility to apply for this licence is a minimum age of 16 years or above.
  • For a driving licence for a light motor vehicle: The eligibility to apply for this licence is a minimum age of 18 years and above.
  • For a driving licence for transport vehicles: Applicants must have a minimum age of 20 years and above to apply for this licence.
  • If one requires transport driving licences for driving auto-rickshaws in the state, the applicant will be exempted from one year of driving experience.

Applicants seeking driving licences are required to provide the following documents to the regional transport office (RTO):

  • A duly filled driving licence application form. The form is also available on the official website of the Karnataka Transport Department.
  • Four passport-size photographs.
  • Medical certificate in Form 1 A and one issued by a licenced government doctor, if applicable.
  • Valid vehicle documents.
  • Age proof such as Voter ID, Aadhaar card, SSLC book, PAN card, etc.
  • Identity proofs such as Voter ID, passport, PAN card or Aadhar card.
  • Proof of residence such as rent or lease agreement, utility bills, ration card copy, etc.
  • Application fees, as applicable.

  • In the next step, complete the slot booking for the DL test.
