In a move that will benefit thousands of slum dwellers in Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched as many as 3,024 newly developed flats for the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) category on November 2, 2022. He successfully handed over the keys to the eligible beneficiaries from the Bhoomiheen Camp at Vigyan Bhawan in the city.
The flats have been developed by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) as part of the first in-situ slum rehabilitation project in Delhi. Additionally, flats in Kathputli Colony and Jailorwala Bagh are currently under construction.
As per the official statement, the in-situ slum rehabilitation in 376 Jhuggi Jhopri clusters has been undertaken by the DDA in line with the PM’s vision of providing housing for all. The rehabilitation project aims to offer a better and healthy living environment to those residing in the Jhuggi Jhopri clusters, with access to proper amenities and facilities.
The flats have been allotted to those living nearby the Bhoomiheen Camp. Once the residents shift to their new flats, their clusters will be razed for Phase 2 of the project to provide housing to the residents of Navjeevan and Jawahar Camps.
Phase 1 of the project has been completed with over 3,000 ready-to-move-in flats built at the cost of around Rs 345 crore and equipped with necessary civic amenities. The allotment of these flats will give the beneficiaries ownership titles and a sense of security, according to the statement.
