The Regional Centre for Urban and Environmental Studies (RCUES), Hyderabad, was established in 1970 at the Osmania University, via a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and Osmania University. It is responsible for research and training in urban governance of state governments, including Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Meghalaya, Nagaland and the union territories of Puducherry and Andaman and Nicobar.

Over the last few years, the main areas of focus of the RCUES are in sync with the schemes announced by the central and the state governments, for the development of urban-local bodies (ULBs).

 

Regional Centre for Urban and Environmental Studies: Key responsibilities

Most organisations seek information on working procedures for urban development and this is where the RCUES Hyderabad plays a key role. It shares crucial information in the form of its goals, the training offered, the achievements and the various events that have been conceived.

The RCUES Hyderabad is responsible for citizen-centric and electronic governance in the ULBs of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Goa. Attention is given towards training staff in the areas of water supply, sewerage, solid waste disposal, roads, power supply, slum redevelopment and property tax payments. Additionally, citizens are trained on citizen report cards using which they can directly report the action taken on grievances.

The RCUES is involved in imparting seminars on themes, including water and waste management, slum redevelopment, city decongestion, urban planning and rejuvenation and poverty alleviation.
