Skandamata Mantra: Who is Skandamata?

Skandamata is the fifth of Goddess Durga’s nine manifestations and is honoured during the fortunate festival of Navratri. She is shown as a four-armed goddess, with two of them holding a lotus bloom each. She also rides a lion while carrying her son Lord Kartikey (in his toddler form) on her lap.

In Hindu mythology, Skandamata is regarded as the mother of Lord Murugan, also known as Kartikeya or Skanda. She is seen as a representation of maternal care and defence. “Mother of Skanda” is the meaning of her name, Skandamata. Worshipping Goddess Skandamata leads to the worship of Lord Kartikey and results in the fulfilment of sincere wishes and desires.

Skandamata Mantra: How to chant it?

  • Place the Skandamata statue or image on a bajot (low wooden table).
  • Cleanse the area before beginning the prayer with Gangajal.
  • Put a water-filled silver, copper, or earthen pot vessel on the bajot to serve as an urn.
  • On the same bajot, place additional idols like Lord Ganesh, Varun, Navagraha (Nine Planets), Shodash Matrika (16 Goddesses), and Sapta Ghrita Matrika (Seven Vermilion Dots).
  • Make a commitment to fast while offering Vedic and Saptashati mantras to all recognised deities, including Goddess Skandamata.
  • Start with invoking, then sit in a comfortable posture. Offer water for feet washing (padya) and hands washing (arghya), aachaman, bath, clean clothes, apply sandalwood, roli (red powder), turmeric, and vermilion. Offer grass (durva), wood apple leaves (bilvapatra), jewellery, phool maala, scented liquid, and light an agarbatti. Present naivedya (food offering), fruit, paan (betel leaves), and dakshina (offering of money) as a sign of gratitude.
  • Conduct Aarti, Pradakshina and Mantra recitation.

  • Flowers should be offered as Pushpanjali, and the Goddess is offered items for Shringar. Worship Lord Kartikeya as well as Skandamata with dedication and reverence. During the puja, give akshat (unbroken rice), flowers, kumkum (vermilion), and fruits. Before the Goddess, light a ghee lamp.

 

  • Prasad (blessed food) should be given out to everyone in the room. Bananas should be offered to Goddess Durga on this day, and a Brahmin should receive them as a gift since they are said to improve wisdom.
