May 29, 2023: Real estate developer Sobha on May 27, 2023, organised a foundation laying ceremony for 100 houses being constructed for families below poverty line in Kizhakkencherry Panchayath, Palakkad district, Kerala. Under the aegis of Sri Kurumba Educational and Charitable Trust, plans are afoot to construct 1,000 houses in the district over the next four years as part of Sobha Community Home Project. The first phase of the project involves the construction of 100 houses, each costing around Rs 15 lakh.
In an event organised in Kizhakkenchery, keys to the 10 completed houses were handed over to the beneficiary families, and six living quarters were handed over to young mothers and their children. Under the social pension scheme, pension was allotted for 50 rural widows. Also, 90 girl children from underprivileged families were inducted into The SOBHA Academy. The trust started a project in 2023 to build houses for the most economically disadvantaged families in Kizhakkencherry Panchayat. The scheme will be implemented in different phases with 100 homeless women-headed families getting houses in 2023-2024.
PNC Menon, founder of Sobha Group and founder and chairman of the Sri Kurumba Educational and Charitable Trust, said, “Food, education and housing are the three basic necessities for any family. However, many in our country don’t have access to these. I strongly feel, if we have been fortunate enough to find success, it is our obligation and our duty to work towards the betterment of our society. It is not charity; it is about accountability and responsibility to the society.”
