How is the stamp duty calculated?

Suppose you bought a property worth Rs 50 Lakh in Delhi. She will have to pay 5% of Rs 50 Lakh as the stamp duty. Considering the stamp duty on property registration for men in the national capital, you will pay Rs 3 Lakh as stamp duty (6% of Rs 50 Lakh) for property registration in Delhi.

 

Is stamp duty the same as registration fee?

No, stamp duty and registration charges are different amounts for property registrations in India. While the stamp duty is the fee collected for property transfers, registration fee is an additional charge to provide the documentation services for the said transfer. This is why buyers in India pay two different charges at the time of property registration.

FM recommends stamp duty rationalisation to states

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her Budget 2024-25 speech said,  “We will encourage states which continue to charge high stamp duty to moderate the rates for all, and also consider further lowering duties for properties purchased by women. This reform will be made an essential component of urban development schemes.”
