The Mumbai police have issued an advisory on March 8, 2023, to property owners renting their properties. As per the advisory, it is mandatory for property owners to submit details of the tenants on the Mumbai police web portal.
The police added that if the tenant is a foreigner, the owner and the tenant should also provide the passport number, place and date of issue, validity and visa details, including visa number, category, place and date of issue, validity, registration place and reason for stay in city, as additional details.
Owners not following the advisory can be punished under Section 188 of Indian Penal Code, 1860. Providing false information to the police is a punishable offence and can attract legal action against the concerned applicant or landlord in case of any discrepancy found in the information submitted.

Tenant detail submission
Mumbai property owners have to visit www.mumbaipolice.gov.in to submit details of the tenants. On the webpage, under ‘Report Us’, select ‘Tenant Information’. You will be led to an online form that has to be filled and submitted. The Mumbai police webpage can be accessed in both English and Marathi.
Details to be submitted include property owner details, rented property details, tenant details, tenant work place details, persons knowing the tenant.
Property owners can also submit the detailed information by going to the local police station. Also, they can send the application through a registered post to the concerned police station.
According to the preventive order, the Mumbai police said that there might be cases where anti-social elements in certain pockets of Mumbai seek hideouts in residential areas, disturbing public peace and leading to danger to human life and damage to property.
