Tamil Nadu hikes stamp duty for 20 legal instruments

Lease, power of attorney among the documents on which stamp duty has been hiked.

The Tamil Nadu government has increased stamp duty on 23 legal instruments, with effect from May 3, 2024. The hike in stamp duty — a tax imposed by states in India on various transactions, including those related to property — is aimed at curbing the expenditure of printing papers for instruments of low denominations.

This is the first time in two decades that the state government has hiked stamp duty on various legal instruments, including adoption deed, affidavit, lease and power of attorney to sell property.

While the stamp duty on adoption deed has been increased from Rs 100 to Rs 1,000, it has been increased to Rs 100 for copy of extraction as against Rs 20 earlier.

Tamil Nadu will also charge 4% of the market value of the property as stamp duty on power of attorney’s used to sell immovable property for consideration. Earlier, the buyer had to pay 4% of the consideration as stamp duty.
