Tamil Nadu launches single-window system for small residential building permits

July 23, 2024: The Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin on July 22 launched a single-window system that will expedite the process of getting building permits for small residential projects.

Launched under the Tamil Nadu Department of Housing and Urban Development, one can construct or redevelop a residential building (ground floor or ground plus one floor) in a plot of upto 2,500 sqft and a built-up area of 3,500 sqft by getting the permission under self-certification scheme immediately.

Note that the building to be constructed cannot be more than 7m in height and it should be constructed around 1.5m from the road.

How to get the permission?

• Log on to the official website at https://www.onlineppa.tn.gov.in/

• Upload the required documents including plot area, details of ownership, width of the road, built-up area of the project and building height.  
• Based on the information fed, the portal will calculate the charges that the applicant has to pay. Once the payment is made, one can download the building permit and drawings instantly with a QR code.

What was the process till now?

The process that was followed before the launch of the portal was the authorities inspecting the site, verifying the documents submitted. This was followed by the local planning authority presenting the drawing and asking for fees.  This process used to take around a month or more after which the permission was granted.
