March 5, 2024: Telangana chief minister A Revanth Reddy is set to lay the foundation stone for the Old City Metro Rail project in Farooq Nagar of Falaknuma on March 8, 2024. Initially, the Phase-I Metro Rail works covering a 5.5-kilometre stretch from MGBS (Imlibun bus station) to Falaknuma of Corridor-II Green Line Jubilee Bus Station (JBS) had not been initiated. However, following the establishment of the new government, the chief minister prioritised the Old City Metro project and instructed Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) officials to expedite it.
According to HMRL managing director NVS Reddy, the alignment will traverse through Darulshifa, Purani Haveli, Etebar Chowk, Alijakotla, Mir Momin Daira, Haribowli, Shalibanda, Shamsheergunj, and Aliabad before reaching the Falaknuma Metro Rail station, as originally planned. The route will include four stations: Salarjung Museum, Charminar, Shalibanda, and Falaknuma.
Furthermore, there are plans to extend the line by another 1.5 kilometre from Falaknuma to Chandrayangutta, which will serve as a significant interchange station on the newly proposed Airport line connecting Nagole – L B Nagar – Chandrayangutta – Mailardevpally – P7 Road – Shamshabad Airport.
The project entails the widening of roads up to 100 feet as per the master plan and up to 120 feet at station locations, affecting approximately 1,100 properties. The estimated cost of the project, inclusive of road widening and utility relocation, is around Rs 2,000 crore.
