Things to keep in mind when buying an art piece for your home

You can make your home look different by decorating it with exquisite art pieces

In a housing society, all units are by and large identical. However, you can make your home look different by decorating it with exquisite art pieces.

“Paintings are one of the most popular artworks that people prefer, for decorating their home’s walls and are still regarded as one the best ways to make your home look exclusive. A handmade original painting can prove to be a connecting bond between you and your home. If the selection of a painting is right, it can turn out to be a good investment. The older they get, the more valuable they become. Unlike other decorative pieces, paintings are one of the few handmade arts, which can give you very good returns in the long-term,” says Komal Jain, founder and owner, ArtlyCraftly.com.

Why should art be an essential part of a home or office decor?

Art, in various forms, is a celebration of human expression. Consequently, artwork placed in and around a home or workplace affects the inhabitant’s space. For example, when someone walks past a giant painting of a beautiful lily pond hung in the living area of their house, it can instantly create a feeling of tranquillity. Art greatly influences one’s mental state when placed appropriately within an environment.

Which are the different categories of painting artworks you can buy for your home or office?

There are many forms of art. If we talk about paintings, they can be in different styles or sizes and it depends on the artist’s imagination.

“For your home, it is important to consider the type of space you want a painting to occupy. The simplest method is by mood – you can choose artwork that reflects whichever emotion you want in the room. For example, sleeping spaces might contain tranquil landscapes that remind us of nature’s beauty, as these are soothing and relaxing. Puja rooms could include religious figures or scriptures painted beautifully to add an air of spirituality. Workplaces are typically designed for performance and success – they are often full of portraits depicting successful people who inspire others with their stories of excellence. Portraits are great, because they provide inspiration without saying anything at all. Apart from decorating the walls, these also project qualities such as openness, humility, bravery, etc., which make them valuable assets in workplaces where employees need constant motivation. Abstract art could be used too, as these denote innovation and creativity,” suggests Uttamaditya, CEO and founder, U&I Interiors.

How to choose a painting artwork for a home or an office?

The painting should be selected, based on the message that you want to convey to your visitors and to people who live in that place. For example, if you are planning to install a painting in a restaurant, you may like to convey a message through it to the customers that the food in the restaurant is hygienic, tasty and enjoyable so that it can create a good image of your restaurant in their mind.

“Primarily for the home or office atmosphere, take in the ambience of the room, along with the mood you want to portray. This will act as a guidepost for what subjects are going to be portrayed in your painting; how they blend harmoniously with the interior design. Whether it is colours, textures, or subject matter, these things should all work well together. For a business environment – whether home or office – different factors need to be taken into account when selecting paintings. Sizes need to work well within those given spaces and iut should be based on the company culture/branding guidelines (depending on if this is an individual’s private domain or an entire organisation),” adds Uttamaditya.

Important points to keep in mind when buying a painting

  • Look for one-of-a-kind pieces that you can connect to personally.
  • The size, type, style and forms of the painting should suit the overall theme.
  • Consider higher-priced paintings for the important rooms at home or work.
  • Make sure they are framed appropriately, so they last longer.
  • Choose the artist carefully, prefer well-known artists and make sure the artwork is original.
  • Paintings are often expensive. So, check with the seller if you can return it in the future, if required.
  • Avoid using cheap printed art. If you are low on budget, you can purchase art from a new artist, after proper due diligence

Tips for buying art print instead of original artwork

“Art print can be a good option if you are very low on budget. However, it is wrong to compare art prints with the original artwork. It is like comparing imitation artificial jewellery with original gold jewellery. Artificial articles may look the same, but you may never have the same feeling that you get while wearing original gold jewellery,” Jain maintains.
