July 3, 2024: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on July 1, 2024, announced the development of Tughlakabad Metro Station as a new metro hub in south Delhi, enhancing connectivity between the Kashmere Gate-Raja Nahar Singh and Tughlakabad-Aerocity corridors. While the current station is elevated, the new addition will be underground, linked by a subway within the paid area.
The new station is designed as a four-level underground structure with platforms at approximately 23 metre below ground, followed by a concourse and an entire floor dedicated to parking, topped by the ground-level roof. The parking facility will accommodate around 250 vehicles and offer direct access to both the Violet and Silver Line stations via lifts, stairs and escalators.
A 45-metre-long subway will connect the existing and new Tughlakabad Metro stations, providing a quick transit route for passengers switching lines. As the terminal station of the new corridor, Tughlakabad will also link to the existing Sarita Vihar depot through a tunnel, which is being expanded to accommodate Silver Line trains, currently serving only Violet Line trains.
The new line will benefit passengers from Faridabad in Haryana by offering a direct route to the domestic airport via the Tughlakabad interchange, significantly reducing travel time. Presently, commuters from the Violet Line need to travel to Central Secretariat and then transfer to the Airport Express Line, a journey taking about 90 minutes.
Tughlakabad will be south Delhi’s fourth interchange facility, joining Kalkaji Mandir, Lajpat Nagar and Hauz Khas. This development will ease commutes for residents of Tughlakabad, Jasola, Sarita Vihar, Badarpur, and nearby areas by providing direct access to Indira Gandhi International Airport and its surroundings.
The Aerocity-Tughlakabad Corridor will feature four elevated stations and 11 underground stations, with interchange facilities at Aerocity, Chattarpur, Saket G, and Tughlakabad. This corridor is poised to become one of the most critical segments of the DMRC network.
