The Uttar Pradesh government has started the work to build more than 8 lakh homes under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-Rural). The announcement by the state government comes a day after the central government approved Rs 10,000 crore for the construction of over eight lakh houses for the poor in UP under the government’s flagship scheme. These houses are expected to be ready by March 2024.
So far, 27 lakh units have been built in UP, the most populous state in India, under Prime Minister Modi’s pet project. With the addition of over 8 lakh homes in this lot, the total number of homes built under the rural component of the PMAY would reach over 35 lakh in UP—the target set for the state under the Central programme.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his gratitude to PM Modi and the ministry of rural development for the approval of funds. Earlier, the UP chief minister had written a letter to the Centre, seeking financial allocation for construction of 8,62,767 new houses in the rural areas of the state.
