One can already feel the vibe in the air as the Holi festival approaches—this year, we will celebrate the festival on March 25. Warm and intense as the festive spirit is, the festival will be equally enjoyable for each one of us if we employed a responsible approach while celebrating. For prospective homebuyers and current homeowners, too, there are several dos and don’ts recommended by both Vastu and astrology.

Griha pravesh, house warmings are strict no-no during Holashthak
The 8 days leading up to Holi — known as Holashthak in Sanskrit— are considered inauspicious. These days include the Falgun Shukla Ashtami, Navami, Dashami, Ekadashi, Dwadashi, Trayodashi, Chaturdashi and Purnima according to the Hindu Calendar. During this period, one is not supposed to plan anything auspicious like Griha Pravesh or house-warming, etc. In 2024, the Holashtak will start from March 17 and run up to March 25.
Don’t initiate home purchase process
The Holashtak period is also not to initiate your home purchase. Even if you have finalised a home and made up your mind about making the purchase, sign an agreement of sale after this period.
Go for deep cleaning before Holi
Deep cleaning of your home is highly recommended during the 8-day period to lower the negative effect of this period and maintain the health and wellbeing of the household.
Take special care to clean north-east side of the house
According to Vastu, the north-east direction is where positive and progressive energies are created. It is the ideal location for a temple at home. This direction is governed by Lord Kuber, and Lord Shiva resides in this location. Vastu also recommends taking special care to clean this side of the house before the Holi festival.
Avoid new purchases
Don’t buy anything new for your home for the Holashtak period either. Astro experts advise against it.
Remove old, unused items from home
Before Holika Dahan (the fire burning ritual on the eve of the Holi festival), make sure you remove all unused and old items from your home that attract negative energy in the home. This is particularly true of dust-gathering old articles of furniture and non-functional electronic devices.
