The story behind the Vastu Purusha Mandala
According to Mayamatam, an ancient scripture, Brahma, the creator of the universe, wished to create life on earth. The result of his experiments was a huge cosmic man with a perpetual glow. This heavenly man’s hunger grew out of bounds, which led to him developing so big that he caused a permanent eclipse on earth, blocking the sunlight.
Brahma, realising that the cosmic man was getting out of hand, asked for the help of the gods of the eight cardinal directions, the Ashta Dikpalakas, to combat the man. It took 45 gods to get a hold of the cosmic man finally. The gods held him down against the surface of the earth with his head facing the northeast and his legs facing the southwest.
As the cosmic being was trapped, he blamed Brahma for his creation. Brahma and the man finally reached a compromise. He would be permanently trapped on the surface of the earth but he would be made immortal and any human who builds a building on earth will have to worship the cosmic man.
The Vastu Purusha Mandala’s outer sector comprises 32 gods, with 13 Gods on the inner side to suppress him. The deities present there bring energy into the individual’s life and promote the quality of life. Thus, people follow the Vastu Purusha Mandala before constructing homes not to upset the deities in that area. Mathematically, Vastu mandala is the visual representation of the architectural design in terms of the star and planet movements. It is essential to have a sound knowledge of Hindu Cosmology for better understanding. As per Hindu Cosmology, the square denotes the earth’s surface, which is the foundation of all Hindu forms. It is a representation of the earth on the four corners, explaining a horizontal relationship with the sunset and sunrise, which is the south and north direction.

Most people feel most productive at around 9 AM to 12 PM. Hence, office areas must be placed in the south as the sun veers this side at around the same time. This increases the productivity and confidence of people.
