What to do if PAN and Aadhaar linking fails?

Aadhaar-PAN linking can also fail because of a name mismatch. Thus, one must correct their details in either PAN or Aadhaar database.

The linking of PAN and Aadhaar is a mandatory exercise that citizens must complete before the deadline of June 30, 2023. Earlier, the deadline to link PAN-Aadhaar was March 31, 2023. However, several users are encountering errors when linking their PAN and Aadhaar after paying the fees of Rs 1,000. Some users have also reported that PAN-Aadhaar linking is not complete due to name mismatch.

According to the Income Tax Department’s e-filing website, the payment done at e-Pay tax/ NSDL (now Protean) may take a few days to reflect on the portal. Hence, if the e-filing portal does not allow a user to proceed further after paying the fees, then it is advised to apply for PAN-Aadhaar linking after 4 to 5 days of making the payment. Challan details will get updated in 26AS. If users are still unable to submit their request, they must check if the payment was done under minor head code 500 or not. If yes, then one can register a grievance or contact the helpdesk, as per the e-filing website.

As per CBDT, the PAN of taxpayers who have failed to link their Aadhaar by June 30, 2023, will become inoperative.
