Who are mamlatdars?
In the Maratha empire, the Mamlatdar was in-charge of the mandal, district, government, suba, etc. Kaamvishdaar was a position equivalent to that of the mamlatdar.
Modern day mamlatdars are the revenue officers of a taluka, who are entrusted with local revenue administration. In north India, the same designation is known as the office of tehsildar. Both mamlatdar and tehsildar are Arabic terms qualifying the chief revenue official of a taluka in India as well as Pakistan.
Mamlatdars are gazetted officers of state governments in India. In Gujarat, for instance, the state government appoints the mamlatdar under Section 12 of the Land Revenue Code. Mamlatdar is also an executive magistrate under Section 20 of the Indian Criminal Procedure Code, 1973.
Duties of mamlatdars
Assisted by revenue inspectors, a Mamlatdar carries out a variety of land and revenue related tasks, including:
- Revenue administration
- Revenue collection
- Co-coordinating with other departments
- Coordinating task of revenue personnel
- Maintaining land records
- Overseeing government land
- Collecting dues
