India is set to witness an expansion of its highway network within the next 12 months.

India is set to witness an expansion of its highway network in 2024, as five new expressways are slated to open for traffic within the next 12 months. The National Highway Authority of India has outlined the expressways scheduled for completion by the coming year. Here is a compilation of the upcoming expressways anticipated to be operational by 2024.

Delhi-Mumbai Expressway

The highly anticipated Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, set to become the longest expressway in India connecting the national capital with the business capital, is on track for completion by the upcoming year. The expressway is slated to be fully operational by February 2024. Presently, the initial stretch from Sohna in Haryana to Dausa in Rajasthan, spanning approximately 29 km, is already open. Covering a total distance of 1,386 km, the expressway will traverse five states, including Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana, Gujarat and Maharashtra. Delhi boasts the shortest stretch at 9 km, while Gujarat claims the majority with a share of 423 km. Notably, the expressway is expected to reduce the distance between Delhi and Mumbai by 180 km, cutting travel time from the previous 24 hours to a mere 12 hours.

Bangalore-Chennai Expressway

The upcoming Bangalore-Chennai Expressway, spanning 262 km, is set to provide a crucial link between two major cities in India. Also recognized as the National Expressway 7 (NE7), this expressway is anticipated to open in the coming year, with a projected cost of Rs 17,000 crore. The expressway is designed to significantly decrease travel time between Bangalore and Chennai to just over 2 hours, presenting a faster alternative to air travel. Light vehicles will be subject to a speed limit of 120 kmph on this expressway.

Dwarka Expressway

The Dwarka Expressway, also known as the Northern Peripheral Road, is nearing completion and is anticipated to be inaugurated before the upcoming summer. Delayed due to restrictions on construction work to address pollution levels, the expressway spans 29 km, linking Dwarka in Delhi to Gurugram in Haryana. Commencing at Shiv-Murti on NH 8 (Delhi-Gurugram Expressway), it concludes near Kherki Daula Toll Plaza, passing through Dwarka Sector 21, Gurugram border and Basai. Approximately 19 kilometer of the expressway fall within Haryana, while the remaining 10 kilometer are in Delhi. The completion of this elevated urban highway is expected to provide commuters with an alternative route to reach the Indira Gandhi International Airport and alleviate about 50% of the traffic on the National Highway 8.

Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway

The Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway, spanning 669 km, is anticipated to significantly reduce travel time between Delhi and Amritsar to just 4 hours upon completion. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) aims to make the expressway operational by the end of 2024, providing a quicker 6-hour drive from Delhi to Katra as the distance will be reduced by 58 km. This expressway is designed to connect various religious hotspots, including the Golden Temple in Amritsar, Gurudwara Darbar Sahib in Taran Taran, as well as Vaishno Devi and Katra.

Delhi-Dehradun Expressway

The upcoming Delhi-Dehradun Expressway is poised to enhance connectivity and reduce travel time between Delhi and Dehradun to less than 3 hours. The final phase of construction is currently in progress, with expectations that the expressway will be open for traffic soon. The last 20 km stretch of this expressway traverses an eco-sensitive zone within Rajaji National Park. To address environmental concerns, the NHAI is implementing the construction of Asia’s longest elevated wildlife corridor, featuring the 340-meter Daat Kali tunnel to bypass the reserved forest area.
