5 tips to maintain soil health

In this guide, discover tips to maintain the health of the soil.

One close look at the soil quickly reveals its fundamental significance. Nature has employed various mechanisms that contribute to the distinctive traits of soil. For instance, the soil microbes aid in decomposing organic matter, thereby supplying nutrients to the plants that thrive on it. Worms like earthworms, centipedes etc. that stay within the soil have a role in preserving soil structure. This helps in retaining water in the soil. Moreover, the rooted plants in the soil help maintain stability thus preventing soil erosion.

Soil is the basis for agriculture, for the eco-system and for managing the environment at large. In this guide, discover tips to maintain/improve the health of the soil.

  • Use of Organic manure: The soil should have a strong structure to retain water and circulate air. This will help in the penetration of the roots inside the soil and aid in growth of the plants. For this, use organic matter such as manure, compost etc. You can also use the plant residue as manure for the soil.

  • No use of chemical pesticides: A popular misconception is that the chemical pesticides will kill the pests, helping the plant grow. However, along with the pests, these pesticides also harm the microbes and worms who live in the soil.

The microbes aid in decomposing organic matter, thereby supplying nutrients to the plants that thrive on it. Worms like earthworms, centipedes etc. that stay within the soil have a role in preserving soil structure. This helps in retaining water in the soil.

If the earthworm is affected by use of chemical pesticides, then the function that it performs on the soil- maintaining soil structure is compromised and the soil gradually decreases in health.

  • Plant diversity: Change the type of plants you grow in your garden every season so that the quality of the soil is maintained. Each type of plant comes with its own advantage. For instance, Tulsi has fibrous roots that add stability to the plant and Dandelion with its tap roots loosen the compacted area of soil by penetrating in it. The soil gets nitrogen from the legumes that are planted.Fibrous roots
  • Maintain the pH value of soil: Regular soil testing is important to identify the deficiency in the soil. The soil should have proper pH and nutrients so that the microbes work and plants on the soil grow healthy.

  • Water management: To maintain the soil health, ensure the soil is watered properly so that it is irrigated and drained. Otherwise, it will result in instances of water logging that will hamper the soil’s healthy properties.
