August 11, 2023: On a national level, 94% records of rights (RoRs) have been digitised as on August 8. 2023. Similarly, 94% of registration offices in the country have also been digitised. The digitisation of maps in the country was at 76%, the ministry of rural development said in a statement today.
“The department of land resources (DoLR) has taken up various initiatives to ease the living of citizens in the recent years. Under the Digital India Land Records Modernization Programme, the department is making efforts for saturation of computerisation of land records and digitalisation of cadastral maps for the benefit of citizens,” it said in a statement.
Besides, the DoLR is assigning Bhu Aadhaar (unique land parcel identification numbers) to all land parcels. In the past one year, almost 9 crore land parcels have been assigned Bhu Aadhaar.
The Bhu-Aadhaar project is touted to be the world’s largest database on land ownership. Rolled out in 26 states, the scheme is in the implementation process in the rest of the 9 states, barring Meghalaya due to its tradition of community ownership of land parcels.
“Earlier, registration of documents was manual but now the registration is being done as e-registration. This has opened up the economy and facilitates capital formation in a big way,” the ministry said.
Private estimates show 66% of all civil suits in India are related to land or property disputes. It is also estimated that the average pendency of a land acquisition dispute is 20 years in the country.
