Mumbai Metro Line 14: Route, status

The IIT-B has been appointed for a peer review of the draft DPR of the Magenta Line.

The Maharashtra government and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) are planning the implementation of a 37.9 km metro corridor- the Mumbai Metro Line 14. Chief minister Eknath Shinde discussed the project status of the Mumbai Metro Line 14 in the ongoing monsoon assembly.

As per media reports, MMRDA has appointed the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B) for a peer review of the draft detailed project report (DPR) of the Magenta Line. The review will include project cost options, ridership, fare, alignment, acquisition of land and project viability with respect to return on investments.

The DPR is submitted by Milan Metro of the municipality of Milan. It has recommended that the Mumbai Metro Line 14 be developed in a public-private partnership (PPP) model.

Also known as the Magenta Line, there will be 15 stations as of now in this line with 13 planned to be elevated, one underground and one at grade. The Mumbai Metro Line 14 will pass through Badlapur, Ambernath, Nilje, Shil Phata, Mahape, Ghansoli, cross the Thane Creek and reach Kanjurmarg. If need be, more stations will be included in this metro line going forward.

The Mumbai Metro Line 14 as per the present DPR includes three interchanges- Metro 4 of Wadala-Ghatkopar-Thane-Kasarvadavali, Metro 6 of Swami Samarth Nagar-Jogeshwari Vikhroli-Kanjurmarg and the Kanjurmarg Railway Station. This metro line will also pass through transit oriented development nodes of Chikoli and others.

According to MMRDA’s internal studies, the approximate peak hour peak direction traffic will be around 54,000 daily in 2041 with the car depot proposed over 20 hectare in Badlapur. The estimated projected ridership is 6.3 lakh in 2026, 6.5 lakh in 2031 and 7.5 lakh in 2041.
