Aadhaar-PAN card linking: How to activate blocked PAN card?

PAN card of those who haven’t linked PAN and Aadhaar before June 30, 2023 have become inoperative.

According to guidelines issued by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), June 30, 2023 was the last date for linking of PAN and Aadhaar card by paying a late fee of Rs 1,000. Failure to adhere to this deadline has resulted in inactivation of the PAN card.

Inactive PAN card: Impact

  • With people having to file Income Tax Returns (ITR) by July 31, 2023, any refund in case won’t be processed for accounts with inactive PAN cards.
  • No interest will be paid for the refund from the IT department that a person is supposed to get for the entire period when the PAN card was inactive.
  • People with inactive PAN cards will have to pay higher TDS on income.

 

How to activate the PAN card?

To make the PAN card operative even after missing the deadline, link the PAN card and Aadhaar card by paying the late fee of Rs 1,000. For this, log on to the Income Tax (I-T) portal and make payment under Challan no. ITNS 280. Once applied for linking, the PAN card will be activated within one month from the date on which request for linking was sent to Aadhaar.

 

PAN–Aadhaar linking: Challan download difficulty

Instances of PAN holders facing difficulty in downloading the challan after payment of fee for Aadhaar-PAN linking has come to the notice of the Income Tax (I-T) department. In this regard, the I-T department in a tweet on June 30, 2023 informed that a PAN holder can proceed for linking of PAN and Aadhaar after checking status of the challan payment on the I-T portal under the e-Pay Tax tab. Downloading of the challan receipt is not required for linking of PAN card and Aadhaar card.

The I-T department also mentioned that it will consider cases where fee payment and consent for linking has been done but the linking was not done till June 30, 2023.
