Ahmedabad becomes India’s first city to get AI-linked surveillance system

The AI surveillance system incorporates live drone footage and camera feeds from traffic signals and buses.

Ahmedabad, the largest city in the Indian state of Gujarat, has marked a historic milestone by becoming the first city in India to integrate an artificial intelligence (AI)-linked surveillance system. Collaborating with a technology company, the city has implemented a cutting-edge AI system designed to analyse extensive data for the enhancement of public safety and security.

The expansive Paldi area in the city now hosts an advanced artificial intelligence command and control centre, featuring a 9 by 3 metre screen. This command centre monitors a vast area of 460 square kilometre, encompassing Ahmedabad and its surroundings. The AI surveillance system incorporates live drone footage and camera feeds from traffic signals and buses, offering a comprehensive six-camera view that surveys the entire city.

Equipped with advanced facial recognition technology, the AI-linked surveillance system can identify and track individuals in real-time. It also possesses the capability to analyse and respond to patterns of criminal behaviour, rendering it an invaluable tool for law enforcement agencies in Ahmedabad. Additionally, the system is designed to contribute to traffic management, crowd control and disaster response efforts.

A comprehensive upgrade of approximately 1,600 CCTV cameras at 130 junctions is currently underway. These cameras integrate advanced AI programs capable of detecting 32 different traffic offences, including speed limit violations. The cameras have demonstrated an impressive 95% accuracy rate in recognizing various offences such as exceeding speed limits, unauthorised entry into the BRTS corridor, using mobile phones while driving and neglecting seatbelt usage, among others.

The latest software implementation aims to enhance the efficiency of issuing electronic memos for swift actions against offenders. As part of the Safe and Secure Ahmedabad (SASA) initiative, the Ahmedabad Smart City Company has successfully installed 5,629 CCTV cameras, strategically placing 1,695 of them at 130 traffic junctions for comprehensive surveillance. The trial run conducted last year demonstrated the AI program’s high accuracy rate in detecting speed limit violations, leveraging advanced technology for enhanced safety and security.
