Bhubaneswar Metro Rail project stands as the flagship project under Odisha’s 5T initiative.

January 3, 2024: Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik on January 1, 2024, laid the foundation stone for the ambitious Rs 6,225 crore Bhubaneswar Metro Rail project. Commencing the ceremony at Ratagada Lenka Sahi near Trishulia, Patnaik conducted a roadshow covering the proposed 26 km route of the metro project. The roadshow was met with enthusiastic support from the public, with people lining both sides of the route and various groups showcasing traditional folk dance and music to welcome the Chief Minister.

Highlighting the significance of this endeavor, Patnaik emphasized that it marks the single largest investment by the state government in any infrastructure project in Odisha’s history. Additionally, it stands as the flagship project under Odisha’s 5T (Transformational) initiative. The metro project is set to feature 20 stations, spanning 26 km from Bhubaneswar airport to Trishulia. Patnaik has called for the preparation of a master plan to extend the metro rail to Khurda, Puri, and Cuttack.

With a four-year timeline for completion, the Bhubaneswar Metro Rail project aims to provide seamless transportation from Bhubaneswar airport to Cuttack via Trishulia, significantly enhancing urban mobility in the state. According to the Detailed Project Report (DPR), the first phase of the project will connect Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) in Bhubaneswar with Trisulia Square. The 20 stations along the route include BPIA, Capital Hospital, Sishu Bhawan, Bapuji Nagar, Bhubaneswar Railway Station, Ram Mandir Square, Vani Vihar, Acharya Vihar Square, Jaydev Vihar Square, Xavier Square, Rail Sadan, District Centre, Damana Square, Patia Square, KIIT Square, Nandan Vihar, Raghunathpur, Nandankanan Zoological Park, Phulapokhari, and Trisulia Square.

For the construction of the metro railway from Biju Patnaik International Airport to Trishulia, the Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Corporation has entered into a contract with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). The DMRC, serving as a turn-key consultant, will oversee the project’s execution and receive a fee of Rs 326.56 crore. This ambitious metro project stands as a transformative initiative, poised to elevate the state’s infrastructure and urban connectivity.
