When it comes to identifying IT hubs in the country, Pune and Bangalore are two cities that come immediately to one’s mind. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has proposed the construction of the Pune Bangalore Expressway under the Bharatmala Pariyojna. The Rs 50,000 crore project is expected to be completed by 2028.

Pune Bangalore Expressway: Project details
- This greenfield expressway is expected to be a faster alternative to the existing National Highway 48 (the old NH4) and will reduce the traffic and congestion experienced here.
- Supporting a speed of 120 km/hr, the new Pune Bangalore Expressway will be a six-lane access controlled expressway.
- The distance between Pune and Bangalore will be reduced by 95 km.
- It will reduce the travel time between Pune and Bangalore to 7 to 8 hours as compared to the existing 11 to 12 hours.
Pune Bangalore Expressway: Cost of the project
The 745-km-long Pune Bangalore Expressway will be constructed at an expense of around Rs 50,000 crore.
Pune Bangalore Expressway: Route
The six-lane asphalted greenfield Pune Bangalore Expressway will start from Varee Budruk. In Maharashtra, the Pune Bangalore Expressway will pass through drought-prone areas of Satara and Sangli districts – Khandala, Phaltan and Khatao in Satara district and Khanapur, Tasgaon and Kavathe Mahankal localities in Sangli district.
In Karnataka, the Pune Bangalore Expressway will pass through Belagavi, Bagalkot, Gadag, Koppal, Ballari, Davangere, Chitradurga, Tumkur and then connect to Bangalore.
Pune Bangalore Expressway: Project plan
Many sections of the existing 849-km highway get submerged during the monsoons, thereby, affecting travel. The new Pune Bangalore Expressway will be designed in such a way that no section is flooded at any time.
Some of the features of the Pune Bangalore Expressway are:
- This is a straight rode that will save around 95 km of the current highway.
- The Pune Bangalore Expressway will include 6 Road Over Bridges (ROBs), 22 Interchanges, 55 Flyovers, 14 National and state highway crossing points, tree plantation on both sides of the Expressway.
- There will be a 15 m divider built in the centre to regulate traffic.
- The Pune Bangalore Expressway will have two airstrips of 5 kms each for emergency landing purposes for aircrafts.
- The Pune Bangalore Expressway will include amenities like restrooms, hotels and play areas for children and trees will be planted alongside the Greenfield highway.
- The Pune Bangalore Expressway will have vehicles plying at a maximum speed of 120 km per hour.
- Over 100m width of Right of Way is being planned so that the Pune Bangalore Expressway can be expanded later.

Pune Bangalore Expressway: Status
Presently in the proposal stage, work has not yet commenced on the Pune Bengaluru expressway project. Once a detailed project report (DPR) is made, the land acquisition for this Greenfield project will start.
