Pune Bangalore Expressway: Land acquisition

According to a Deccan Herald report, the NHAI has mentioned that nearly 2,000 acre of green fields in Karnataka including 383 acre forest land are needed for the Pune Bangalore Expressway construction. The Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) of the project is yet to be finalised, as per the report. Also, it mentioned that NHAI officials estimate felling of 25,000 trees, 60% of which is in Karnataka.

This greenfield expressway is expected to be a faster alternative to the existing National Highway 48 (the old NH4) and will reduce the traffic and congestion experienced here. Supporting a speed of 120 km/hr, the new Pune Bangalore Expressway will be a six-lane access controlled expressway. The distance between Pune and Bangalore will be reduced by 95 km. It will reduce the travel time between Pune and Bangalore to 7 to 8 hours as compared to the existing 11 to 12 hours.

The 745-km-long Pune Bangalore Expressway will be constructed at an expense of around Rs 40,000 crore.

Many sections of the existing 849-km highway get submerged during the monsoons, thereby, affecting travel. The new Pune Bangalore Expressway will be designed in such a way that no section is flooded at any time.

The Pune Bangalore Expressway will have two airstrips of 5 kms each for emergency landing purposes for aircrafts. The Pune Bangalore Expressway will include amenities like restrooms, hotels and play areas for children and trees will be planted alongside the Greenfield highway.  The Pune Bangalore Expressway will have vehicles plying at a maximum speed of 120 km per hour. As it is planned to be 100 metres in width, the Pune Bangalore Expressway will be bigger than the Mumbai Pune Expressway.
