Aqua Line extension DPR tweaked to ensure better connect with Delhi Metro

The extension corridor is expected to have 9 stations.

December 12, 2023: The Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC) on December 11 said that it has made a tweak in the Noida Metro (Aqua Line) Extension detailed project report (DPR) to offer seamless connectivity with the Delhi Metro Blue Line.

Recall here that the Public Investment Board approved the proposed extension of Noida’s Metro’s Aqua Line from Sector 51 to Knowledge Park-V in Greater Noida. To be developed in two phases, the extension corridor is expected to have 9 stations, including Sector 122, Sector 123, Greater Noida Sector 4, Ecotech, Greater Noida Sector 2, Greater Noida Sector 3, Greater Noida Sector 10, Greater Noida Sector 12 and Knowledge Park V. The 14.9-km metro link would ensure greater connectivity for Noida residents.

However, the extension of services between Noida and Greater Noida West has been impeded by the lack of “seamless connectivity” between the NMRC’s Aqua Line and Delhi Metro’s Blue Line, according to the NMRC.

As of now, passengers must deboard the Delhi Metro Blue Line at the Noida Sector 51 Station and then walk a distance of 430 metres to check into the Noida Sector 51 Metro Station to get to the Aqua Line. They also have to go through the security check and ticketing process for switching over. Authorities provide free e-rickshaw services to commuters to make the process less cumbersome. For the future, a foot-overbridge is also planned to cut down the hassle.

“There is a constraint of seamless connectivity between Sector-51 station of Aqua Line and Sector-52 station of Blue Line of Delhi Metro. Although a foot-overbridge has been planned to connect Sector 51 (Aqua Line) and Sector 52 (Blue Line) stations, it is not going to resolve commuters’ problem permanently owing to a 430-metre distance between the two stations,” said NMRC managing director Lokesh M.

Travelling a distance of 430 metres between the two stations will always be a deterrent to encourage commuters to use this FoB connection even after the provision of travellators, he added.

“The connectivity solution has to be found at this stage, and if an extension is pursued as per the DPR, the seamless connectivity issue of the Aqua Line and the Blue Line will remain unresolved forever with no scope for further correction. It would be prudent to take up an extension of the Aqua Line without aforementioned constraint as it will have a long-term adverse effect on footfall,” the NMRC MD said.

A permanent solution has been worked out for seamless connectivity of the two lines by a slight change in the alignment of the extension of the Aqua Line going up to Knowledge Park-V. “Action has already been initiated to carry out these changes in the DPR. The revised DPR will be processed soon for approvals,” he said.
