Bandra Worli Sea Link: History

The Mahim Causeway was the only route connecting Mumbai’s western suburbs to the city’s financial sector prior to the construction of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. As a result, the north-south corridor saw severe congestion during rush hour. The Bandra-Worli Sea Link was the first phase of the Western Motorway project, which was conceptualised to address this issue and provide an alternate route to the Mahim Causeway.

The foundation stone of the Mumbai bridge was laid by the late Bal Thackrey in 1999. The project was expected to cost Rs 660 crore and take five years to complete. However, it got delayed due to multiple public interest lawsuits. Following a five-year delay, the bridge’s price rose to Rs 1,600 crore. The bridge was inaugurated in 2009.

Bandra-Worli Sea Link: Architecture

The Bandra-Worli Sea Link was started by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and completed by Hindustan Construction Company (HCC). This link has the heaviest precast components ever constructed in India and pre-stressed concrete-steel viaducts on either side. The main span of the Mumbai bridge is the longest concrete deck. The pylon towers utilised in the structure have a special and intricate geometry because of the geology of the seabed. The tallest pylon used here is 128 m and its height gradually decreases as one travels away.
