August 5, 2024: The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has announced that the 3.7-km Green Line extension of Namma Metro, from Nagasandra to Madavara in north Bangalore, is expected to commence commercial operations by October 2024, following a five-year delay. The project faced multiple setbacks, including construction delays, land acquisition issues with NICE authorities and the impact of the pandemic.
Part of the Phase 2 expansion of Namma Metro, this extension will add three new stations: Manjunathnagar, Chikkabidarakallu and Madavara. Operations will begin once the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) grants safety clearance, anticipated by September.
Currently, Green Line trains terminate at Nagasandra. Service frequency will be adjusted to meet demand, with the extension projected to attract an additional 25,000 to 30,000 passengers daily. Construction at Madavara is nearly complete, and traction power supply is finished at the other two new stations, with finalisation at Madavara underway. Trial runs are expected to start in the coming weeks.
The Madavara extension will provide direct access to the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre, a major venue for expos, benefiting travellers from Nelamangala and nearby areas with improved Metro connectivity. Additionally, BMRCL plans to launch the Yellow Line, a 19.15-kilometre route from RV Road to Bommasandra, by the end of this year. This line will operate with at least eight trains running at 15-minute intervals.
