BBMP issues notices to 6 lakh property tax defaulters in Bangalore

These six lakh defaulters collectively owe around Rs 500 crore to the civic body.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has intensified its efforts to recover property tax dues in Bangalore, targeting over six lakh defaulters who collectively owe around Rs 500 crore to the civic body. In an attempt to prompt compliance, BBMP has initiated a multi-channel communication strategy, sending text messages to notify property owners of the impending consequences if their outstanding taxes are not promptly cleared.

These warnings highlight the legal repercussions that defaulters may face under the BBMP Act 2020. The potential actions include the sale of movable properties, attachment and sealing of immovable properties, entry of attachment details in the encumbrance certificate issued by the sub-registrar, as well as the seizure and recovery of funds from bank accounts. Additionally, the messages underscore the possibility of criminal cases being initiated against defaulters.

To facilitate the settlement of dues, BBMP has provided a convenient online payment option through a dedicated link, https://bbmptax.karnataka.gov.in. The texts urge property owners to utilise this platform to clear their arrears promptly and avoid the serious consequences outlined in the warnings. Furthermore, BBMP has encouraged property owners to reach out to their local ward offices or the ward-level Assistant Revenue Officer’s office for assistance in resolving outstanding property tax issues.

This initiative forms part of BBMP’s ongoing drive to recover property tax arrears and boost its revenue. In the 2023-24 budget, BBMP has set an ambitious property tax collection target of Rs 4,600 crore, signaling an increase from the Rs 3,332 crore collected in the previous fiscal year. The severity of the drive is evident from the recent sealing of several commercial properties in the third week of December 2023 due to non-payment of property taxes.
