In India, people lay great emphasis on auspicious muhurat for auspicious events, such as the first entry into a new house, known as Griha Pravesh or the housewarming ceremony. According to Vastu Shastra, a Griha Pravesh puja is performed to purify the new house and invite happiness, health and prosperity for the inhabitants. In the Bengali community, one can consult an astrologer or refer a Panjika (panchang) to know the auspicious dates for a Griha Pravesh (Griha Prabesh or Grihoprobesh in Bengali).

 

Bengali Griha Pravesh 2024: Significance

Certain months, such as Magh, Phalgun, Baisakh and Jeshtha, are favourable for Griha Pravesh, whereas Ashadha, Shravana, Bhadrapad, Ashwin and Pausha must be avoided. Griha Pravesh muhurat dates are calculated after considering the favourable months, dates, thithi and nakshatra. One should consider the position of the nine planets and lagna. According to Vastu, one should enter the new house at an auspicious time by performing puja and chanting mantras. This ensures that positive energies enter the house and bring prosperity to the family.

Can we do Griha Pravesh puja on Durga Puja 2024?

Durga Puja or Durgotsava is an important festival for Bengalis. It is celebrated as a 10-day-long festival and is considered to be an auspicious time. Durga Puja is celebrated during the Navratri and the celebrations begin on the sixth day of Sharad Navratri. According to popular belief, starting any new activity or venture during this time brings favourable results. A Griha Pravesh puja is performed to seek the blessings of the deities and the nine planets. The rituals include Mangal Ghat Sthapana, Dwar Prabesh puja, Sankalp, Ganpati puja, Vastu puja, Mahalakshmi puja, Navagraha puja, milk boiling ceremony, mangal aarti, havan, purnahuti and prasad distribution.

 

Bengali Griha Pravesh: Dos and Don’ts

Dos

  • Choose an auspicious date for the Griha Pravesh by consulting a Bengali Panjika (calendar).
  • Decorate the entrance of the new house with auspicious symbols, such as Swastik or Goddess Lakshmi’s feet.
  • Place mango leaves and marigold flowers in the doorway. Add lemon and chilli to keep away evil eyes.
  • Before performing a Griha Pravesh puja, make sure there is a gas burner.
  • Place a kalash (pot) filled with water. Put a coin and nine types of grains in it.
  • Place a coconut on the kalash. The owner should carry the kalash into the new house while chanting mantras along with the priest.
  • Enter the new house by placing your right foot first. This brings success.
  • Break the coconut. This is considered auspicious and eliminates obstacles in life.
  • Install the home temple in the east direction of the house on the day of Griha Pravesh.
  • Boil milk in the kitchen of the new house. Allow the milk to slightly overflow the container. This ensures an abundance of wealth and food.
  • During Griha Pravesh puja, one should blow conch shells (shankh) as its auspicious sound removes the effects of evil forces.
  • Spray the holy puja water or Gangajal everywhere in the house. This helps purify the surroundings.

Don’ts

  • One should enter a new house on a Tuesday.
  • Do not shift any furniture until the Griha Pravesh puja is completed.
  • Avoid leaving the new house for at least three days after performing the Griha Pravesh puja.
  • Do not perform the Griha Pravesh puja if a female family member is pregnant or if there has been a death in the family.
