Chennai Airport-Kilambakkam Metro line gets CUMTA nod

The 15.5-km elevated metro line is an extension of Phase 1 metro corridor from Washermenpet to the airport.

Construction of the 15.5-km Airport-Kilambakkam metro line in Chennai is expected to begin soon as Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) has approved the metro project with the government order in this regard awaited.

CUMTA approval implies that commuters will receive intermodal connectivity and can easily switch between different transport modes such as metro trains, MTC, outstation buses and airports.

The 15.5-km elevated section is an extension of phase 1 metro corridor from Washermenpet to the airport. The metro extension from the airport to Kilambakkam, estimated around Rs 4,080 crore, will connect several southern suburbs beyond Tambaram, including the under-construction bus terminus at Kilambakkam with city core localities. There will be 12 metro stations on the route.

The metro extension line will cover several localities of the suburb such as Pallavaram, Chromepet, Tambaram, Irumbuliyur, Peerkankaranai, Perungalathur, Vandalur and Kilambakkam. Airport will be the interchange to switch corridors to reach core city localities, north and west suburbs and transport hubs such as Central, Egmore and Koyambedu.

The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) may begin floating tenders for the metro project. CUMTA’s recommendation will help fast track the metro project as approval from other departments will be easy since CUMTA is the nodal agency under the chief minister.

As per a CMRL official, the detailed project report (DPR) has been prepared and revised later and submitted to the Tamil Nadu government. The project is government’s top priority.

Earlier this year, CMRL was in talks with the state highways which planned an elevated corridor along the same route from airport to Irumbuliyur. CMRL viaduct is proposed at Level 2 between Pallavaram rotary and Tambaram rotary to facilitate future construction of elevated road/ grade seperators on the stretch.

I Jeyakumar, Cumta special officer, said that the final proposal must be sent to the government. It is important to improve the public transport connectivity to Kilambakkam as 65% of the passengers will have to travel there to board buses to places including Erode, Coimbatore, and Madurai. Once the formalities is complete, the proposed railway halt will be developed in 15 months.
