Chennai Metro Orange Line: Route, map, latest updates

The Chennai Metro Orange Line comprises 28 stations, with 10 underground stations.

The Chennai Metro network provides excellent connectivity to the residents of Chennai and neighbouring regions. It comprises two operational lines – the Blue Line and the Green Line. The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) built and operates the Chennai Metro. The CMRL is working on the expansion of the Chennai Metro network. The Chennai Metro Orange Line or Line 4 is an under-construction line developed under Chennai Metro Phase-2 project. The Chennai Metro Orange Line will connect Poonamallee Bypass to the Lighthouse region, which is expected to be operational by 2026.

The train operations on the Chennai Metro Orange Line start around 4:30 AM and end at 11 PM. Trains operate at a frequency of four to five minutes during peak hours and every 15 minutes during non-peak hours.

  • Renewable energy: The electricity for the stations and other facilities in the Chennai Metro Orange Line is run using solar power.
  • Energy efficiency: The trains and machinery consume less energy, resulting in energy efficiency.
  • Water conservation: A rainwater harvesting system has been used.
  • Green building materials: The construction includes the use of fly ash bricks, recycled steel, etc.
  • Tree plantation: Over 10,000 trees have been planted along the Orange Line corridor.
  • Waste management: The CMRL is implementing a waste management system to ensure proper disposal of construction waste.

The Chennai Metro Orange Line is expected to boost connectivity in the Chennai Metropolitan Area, connecting key localities between Lighthouse near Marina Beach and Poonamallee Bypass towards the west. The metro will pass through major residential localities, such as Alwarthiru Nagar, Valasaravakkam, Karambakkam, Alapakkam, Thelliyaragaram, Kattupakkam, Kumananchavadi and Karaynchavadi. Some of these localities, such as Karambakkam, Alapakkam, Thelliyaragaram, Kattupakkam, Karaynchavadi, etc., are educational hubs set to receive metro connectivity.

The areas along the metro corridor are witnessing significant demand for commercial properties. Besides, these areas are expected to see an increased demand for residential properties with a significant increase in prices in coming years.
