Coimbatore metro route, map and construction updates

Tamil Nadu government has allotted Rs 9,0.00 crore for the Metro rail project in Coimbatore. The announcement was made by Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan while presenting the state Budget 2023-24 on March 20, 2023.

Chennai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (CMRL) is planning to operate metro train services on five corridors in Coimbatore. In 2019, a feasibility study was conducted to implement the Metro project in 144 kms.

According to CMRL officials, the detailed projected report (DPR) for the proposed Coimbatore Metro route will be completed by June 2023. The CMRL has been entrusted with the task of hiring consultants to prepare a feasibility report and DPR for the mass rapid transit system in the city. According to the feasibility report, a 40-kilometre section was proposed, comprising two corridors under phase 1. The first corridor would connect PSG Foundry to Ukkadam Bus Stand while the second corridor would connect Collectorate to Valiyampalayam Pirivu.

Coimbatore Metro construction: Proposed Metro routes

Phase 1 of Coimbatore Metro will include two corridors – the first corridor of 31.73 km and the second corridor of 14.13 km, comprising 40 stations.

Line 1

Metro line 1 will connect Kaniyur with Ukkadam Bus Stand. It will be an elevated section of 26 km, with alignment along the Avinashi Road.

Line 2

The Metro line 2, covering 24 km, will connect Bilichi to Ukkadam Bus Stand. The elevated stretch will have an alignment along Mettupalayam Road.

Line 3

Metro line 3 will cover a distance of 42 km from Karanampettai to Thannerpanthal. The alignment of the elevated section will be along Trichy Road and Thadagam Road.

Line 4

The Metro line 4 will cover a distance of 44 km from Ganeshapuram to Karunyanagar. It will be an elevated line with alignment along the Sathyamangalam Road and Perur Road.

Line 5

The Metro line 5 is an elevated section from Vellalore to Ukkadam, covering 8 km, with alignment via Poddanur and NH 948.
