With the placement of the last span of the 550-metre viaduct on January 22, 2023, over the Kasheli creek, Mumbai’s first Metro viaduct that will pass over a water body is complete. This path is an important path of Phase 1 of Mumbai Metro Line 5. Also known as the orange line, the implementing agency of the 24.9 km Mumbai Metro Line 5 is MMRDA and the project cost is valued at Rs 8,417 crore.
The Kasheli Creek Bridge, is the first one to be 15 metres over the water body, has a total of 15 segments and 13 spans of which 9 are under water. Length of each span is 42.23 metres and these were placed using launching girders in over 4 months. Mumbai-based infrastructure company ‘Afcons’, completed the construction of the Kasheli creek bridge.
Phase-1 of the Mumbai Metro Line-5 connects Thane to Bhiwandi and includes the creek bridge. Phase-2 of the Mumbai Metro Line 5 connects Bhiwandi to Kalyan. Note that Mumbai Metro Line 5 will be integrated with Mumbai Metro Line 4, also known as the Green line, connecting Thane and Wadala through a 11 km viaduct. It will also connect six metro stations namely Balkum, Kasheli, Kalher, Purna, Anjurphata and Dhamankar Naka. According to Afcons, of 11.68 km viaduct, superstructure is completed on 9.3 km, 60% work is done in all the six stations and 70% of the work of the entire package is done.
